The air felt light as I sucked it in and out. I could only hear the sound of my breathing and my feet pounding against the pavement. To my left I watched lizards duck in and out of the black lava ridges and to my right the red sand reflected the bright sun. At 110 degrees, my skin felt like it was baking from the inside out. At nearly noon, I was the only runner on the paths at the outskirt of my childhood home.
